AAA Moving & Storage/Allied Alaska Collects 10,000 LBS. of Food

August 9, 2019

For the fifth year in a row, our friends at AAA Moving and Storage/Allied Alaska captured the spirit of giving during the middle of summer by holding Christmas in July food drive.

Although most people decide to hold food drives before Thanksgiving and during the holiday season, hunger is a year-round problem that requires a year-round response. The need for donations is especially acute during the summer, when children are on vacation and are no longer receiving breakfast/lunch at school. Families who rely on these programs often turn to their local food bank or pantry to replace those meals.

More than 100,000 people in Alaska are facing hunger every day, including 1 in 6 children. AAA Moving Storage/Allied Alaska has always recognized the urgency of the problem, and that’s why they have made this event an annual tradition. This year, they organized Fill-A-Truck food drives at Walmarts in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Ketchikan, Kodiak, Sitka, and Wasilla.

This year’s drive proved to be the most successful to date, as AAA Moving & Storage/Allied Alaska collected 10,161 pounds of food, which is nearly 4,000 lbs more than they collected 2018! That’s enough food to provide more than 8,450 meals to their neighbors in need. All of the donations were delivered to the Food Bank of Alaska.

Thank you to John Lloyd and the whole crew at AAA Moving & Storage/Allied Alaska for your continued support of our fight to end hunger!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
