AAA Movers Helps Fight Hunger in Minnesota All Summer Long

September 17, 2018

AAA Movers wanted to get more involved in the fight against hunger and they figured that holding a food drive at their new office would be a great place to start. So from June-August, AAA Movers encouraged employees and members of the local community to bring donations of non-perishable food to the company's new office in Brooklyn Park, MN.

Summer is the busiest time of year in the moving industry, and also happens to be the time of year that food banks need the most help. Families with children who receive free or reduced-cost breakfast/lunch at school have to replace those meals when classes end, and that puts a strain on the food banks' already limited resources. To say that we were excited to learn that AAA Movers was willing to devote what extra time they had to hold a food drive would be an understatement.

AAA Movers collected 400 lbs. of food in total, which is enough to provide 330 meals! All of the donations were to The Food Group, which provides assistance to people facing hunger in 32 counties in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Nearly 132,000 people in Hennepin County face hunger each day, including 1 in 8 children. Numbers like those highlight the urgency of the problem and why it's so important for us all to take action. "

Those statistics are serious," said Julio Silva, AAA's Business Development Manager, during an interview with CCX News in June. "I believe that this community, our community, needs to help out and do whatever we can."

Thank you to Julio, AAA Movers, and everyone who made a donation for doing your part to fight summer hunger!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
