A Bold Food Rescue in Colorado

June 15, 2018

If you've ever participated in a race or walk, chances are that you have been greeted by fresh fruit, bagels, drinks, and other food at the finish line, but have you ever thought about where all of the uneaten food goes? This year at the Bolder Boulder 10k race/walk in Boulder, Colorado, a group of volunteers made sure that none of this post-race food went to waste.

Our friends from  Colorado Hi-Tec Moving & Storage, a Wheaton agent, set out on Memorial Day weekend to rescue any food/beverages that were leftover after the 10k race. With a turnout of over 50,000 participants, the Bolder Boulder 10k was a great opportunity to collect a high-volume of food in just one day. In 2017, Colorado Hi-Tec rescued 8,300 pounds of food from this race, but this year they were able to top that, rescuing more than 9,800 pounds of food/drinks!

Over the past two years, Colorado Hi-Tec has saved more than 18,000 pounds of food/beverages from the Bolder Boulder 10k race alone. As if that isn't enough, Colorado Hi-Tec has also turned their miles into meals by raising $4,900 with Team Move For Hunger at the Colfax Marathon's 5K in each of the last 4 years. As one of our most dedicated members, Colorado Hi-Tec has consistently gone above and beyond, and has been a huge inspiration when it comes to fighting hunger.

A big thank you goes out to Colorado Hi-Tec and all of their amazing volunteers who have tirelessly participated in fundraisers, races, and food rescues. Your hard work has helped thousands!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
