Wilmette, IL Elementary Schools Collect 1,000 LBS. of Food!

December 10, 2019

For the third year in a row,  we helped the students at Harper and Romona Elementary Schools in Wilmette, IL hold Thanksgiving Food Drives. This year, all of the donations benefited Connections for the Homeless, an organization that oversees a number of shelters in the area.

HarperAndRomanaElementarySchoolFoodDrive 2019(3).jpgFrom November 1-15, the students at both schools encouraged members of the Wilmette community to bring in donations of non-perishable food to help provide meals for people who are experiencing homelessness. In just over two weeks, the kids had collected 1,040 lbs. of food, which is enough to provide 860 meals! Our friends from New World Van Lines assisted with the event by providing food collection boxes and by offering to deliver all of the donations to Connections to the Homeless.

Move For Hunger became involved in this event thanks to Ali Wenzke, author of the book The Art of Happy Moving, and one of our biggest advocates. We’re so glad that she asked us if our network would be able to help, as this has become a food drive that we now look forward to every year.

A big thank you to Harper & Romona Elementary Schools, Ali, and the crew at New World Van Lines for working together to help others again this year!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
