Ward North American Partners With Move For Hunger

September 20, 2019

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Ward North American and Move For Hunger today announced a partnership to reduce food waste and fight hunger in the United States. As a member of the Move For Hunger network since 2015, Ward’s six branches in Texas and Arizona have been collecting food from people who are moving and delivering it to their local food banks. As an official partner, Ward North American will now provide Move For Hunger with additional funding so that the non-profit can continue to organize food drives, coordinate food rescues, and expand its network.

People throw away a lot of things when they move, including perfectly good food. Ward North American educates their customers about the issues of hunger and food waste and encourages them to donate their non-perishable food items on moving day. Ward North American then delivers the donations to the local food bank or pantry, free of charge.

“More than 40 million Americans are food insecure, including 1 in 6 children. Meanwhile, we are wasting 40% of the food in the United States every year,” explains Adam Lowy, Executive Director and Founder of Move For Hunger. “Ward North American recognizes the urgency of the problem and is committed to taking action. We are proud to call them our partners.”

“Our entire organization is committed to this expanded partnership with Move For Hunger,” said Kate Houston of Ward North American. “Collectively, the relocation industry is working to bring awareness to food waste and facilitate solutions to get food into to the homes and kitchen tables where it is needed. We stand with Move for Hunger and our industry partners in this important mission”

Nearly 1,000 moving companies across the United States and Canada now provide their customers with the opportunity to donate their food when they move. Thirty-five million Americans move each year. Rescuing just one pound of food from each of them would provide 29 million meals for people facing hunger.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
