How to Use Facebook to Promote Your Food Drive

February 24, 2017

One of the best ways to promote your food drive is by utilizing Facebook. It's an easy way to reach a lot of people and, best of all, its free.

A great tool to use is Facebook Events. When creating an event be sure to include details on the event page such as the date, time, and location of your food drive. It's also important to include information about hunger in your area and explain why making a donation is so important. Be sure to visit Feeding America's Map The Meal Gap for hunger statistics in your state, county, or congressional district. If you've set a goal for your food drive, challenge your community to help you reach it.

Once you've created an event page, be sure to invite local organizations and companies to participate. Invitations are a great way to spread the word about your food drive, and RSVPs will help you determine what kind of turn out you can expect.

Be sure to make your page visually attractive. People will be more likely to check your event page if it is nicer to look at. If you host a food drive with Move For Hunger, our Graphics team will create a flier that you can use a cover image. Be sure to check out our Visualize Hunger page for infographics that you can share to help educate your followers about hunger and food waste.

Leading up to the event, post updates on the page, and encourage your guests to invite their friends and family. After the event, be sure to share photos, thank your donors, and let everyone know how much food you collected.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
