Toms River Black Sox Baseball Club Collects Over 3,000 Pounds of Food

December 12, 2019

NJWMABlackSocksBaseballFoodDRive-SeacureMoving2019 (13).jpgThe Black Sox Baseball Club of Toms River, NJ, hosted a food drive on Sunday, October 13 from 4:00-8:00 PM, to benefit Move For Hunger. The Food Drive was held in conjunction with their annual Old Timers Alumni Game at Castner Field at Toms River East Little League. Between their online fundraising efforts and donations the day of the event, the Black Sox Baseball Club raised more than $2,400 and collected 3,100 lbs. of food! Sea Cure Moving & Storage of Tuckerton, a Bekins agent, generously donated their time to deliver the non-perishable food donations to Fulfill.

The Black Sox Baseball club has been a leader in community involvement for over 29 years. The organization challenged the 8 teams participating in their Old Timers Alumni game to a 100 can challenge in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Black Sox Baseball Scandal. Each team was charged with the task of collecting 100 or more cans of nonperishable food items to reach their goal of 2,000 food items and $1,000 in monetary donations. They far exceeded these goals, and their donations will directly benefit hunger relief programs in New Jersey and across the country!

More than 103,000 residents of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, including 1 in 7 children, face hunger. Many thanks to the Black Sox Baseball Club, Toms River East Little League, the New Jersey Warehousemen & Movers Association and Sea Cure Moving & Storage of Tuckerton, whose successful teamwork provided thousands of meals to their neighbors in need.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
