The Moving Guys and Eat Clean Bro Team Up for Hurricane Florence Relief

October 11, 2018

When Move For Hunger's home state of New Jersey was struck directly by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, different people from around the world came together to support those in need. Thousands of victims lost their homes and loved ones and were left without sources of food or water. The outcomes of hurricanes are incredibly scary, but it's the kindness of surrounding communities that make all the difference for those who need help.

The Moving Guys and Eat Clean Bro are a perfect example of that kindness, in fact, they created an incredible disaster relief project for Hurricane Florence, just like those who helped New Jersey 6 years ago.

Over 4 days, The Moving Guys and Eat Clean Bro traveled to various food markets and grocery stores to help fill a truck with food, water, and supplies. From BJ's and Restaurant Depot, to local spots like Food Emporium, Tuscany and Net Cost Market, each stop was an absolute success. Nearly 10,000 pounds of food and water and 1,500 pounds of other supplies made the voyage down the east coast on The Moving Guys truck. They reached their destination, the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, on September 22.

More than 1.5 million people in North Carolina, including 1 in 5 children, were food insecure before the storm hit. Those numbers are almost certainly higher after Hurricane Florence. The effort and dedication of The Moving Guys and Eat Clean Bro is so incredibly important in times like these, and we are so thankful to fight hunger side by side with them. Thank you for all of your hard work!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
