Oakwood Worldwide's Residents Donated Their Food When They Moved

September 28, 2018

Many people throw out a good deal of “stuff” when they move. Unfortunately, a lot of this “stuff” is perfectly good food that could be given to families in need. Move For Hunger was essentially born on solving this food waste problem, and it's the movers, apartment communities, and other members of our network that make that goal possible.

Oakwood Worldwide is a corporate housing provider that is helping us make a difference. This summer, they housed hundreds of summer interns. When August rolled around and it was time for the interns to move out of their apartments, Oakwood Worldwide saw the perfect opportunity to hold a food drive.

Six Oakwood Worldwide Properties -- 5 in California and 1 in Washington state -- collected non-perishable food that otherwise would be thrown out in the moving process. In addition to the interns, all of the residents at each property were encouraged to donate, even if they were not moving out. By the end of the month, Oakwood had collected more than 1,600 pounds of food, which is enough to provide 1,300 meals for those in need! With the help of Ace Relocation Systems, an Atlas Van Lines agent, the California donations were then delivered to Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara & San Mateo Counties. The Washington donations were picked up by Eco-Movers and transported to the Queen Anne Food Bank.

Forty-two million people in the U.S. face hunger every day, yet about 40% of the food grown, processed and transported in the country will go to waste. The numbers are scary, but they don't have to be this way. In fact, according to The National Resource Defense Council, if we were able to rescue just 15% of the food we waste each year, we’d save enough to feed 25 million Americans. Thanks so much to Oakwood Worldwide, Ace Relocation Systems, Eco-Movers, and all of the residents who made a donation for dedicating themselves to reducing food waste and helping their community.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
