September 2019 Mover of the Month: Dircks Moving & Logistics

October 21, 2019

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Dircks Moving & Logistics has been named our Mover of the Month for September 2019!

For the last 3 years, Dircks Moving & Logistics has volunteered to pick up all of the leftover food/beverages from the Tempe Triathlon and deliver it to a local food bank.

After swimming, biking, and running a combined 8 miles (at a minimum!) the athletes who competed in the triathlon need to hydrate and replenish all of the calories they just burned. There are always plenty of snacks and drinks at the finish line to help the participants refuel, and there’s usually a lot leftover. At similar events, they food might typically just be thrown in the trash, but not this one!

On September 15, Dircks Moving & Logistics loaded up nearly 3,800 lbs. of bananas, pretzels, Gatorade, and water onto one of their trucks and delivered it all to Andre House! Over the past 3 years, the Dircks Moving team has rescued more than 13,500 lbs. of food/drinks from this event, alone.

Maricopa County has one of the highest rates of food insecurity in the United States. More than 571,000 people in the County are food insecure, including 1 in 5 children. Thank you to everyone at Dircks Moving & Storage for recovering nearly 7 tons of food for your neighbors in need.

In addition to the award, Dircks Moving & Logistics will also be receiving Move For Hunger truck decals for their entire fleet.

Congratulations to Dircks moving & Logistics on this much-deserved recognition! Thank you for helping us reduce food waste and fight hunger in Arizona!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
