Quality Move Management Provides More Than 47,000 Meals to Canadians in Need

January 28, 2019

Household food insecurity in Canada has been on the rise. According to PROOF, the prevalence of food insecurity in Canada increased from 11.3% in 2007-08 to 12.4% in 2011-12, which was the last time a survey of every province was conducted. More than 4 million Canadians, and 1 of every 8 households, struggle to put food on the table.

And that's why we are now working with relocation specialists all across Canada to reduce food waste and fight hunger. Sixty Canadian moving companies now provide their customers with the opportunity to donate their food when they move. Although all of those partners have made an impact, none have been more prolific than Quality Move Management (QMM), whose four branches have combined to collect more than 120,500 lbs. of food since 2012 -- enough to provide 100,000 meals.

One of the big keys to QMM's success is their annual holiday food drive. In 2017, they collected more than 52,000 lbs. of food, which is an incredible accomplishment! Yet, QMM wasn't satisfied, and they pledged that they'd be able to do even better in 2018.

From November 1-December 28, QMM's branches in Brampton, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver collected donations of peanut butter, tuna, canned fruit/vegetables, and other non-perishable items to help provide meals for their neighbors in need. Over the course of those 2 months QMM's clients, owner-operators, and suppliers donated more than 57,400 lbs. of food! Not only was that a personal best, it was also one of Move For Hunger's largest donations of the entire year!

QMM's crews in each city personally delivered the donations their local food bank: Knights Table (Brampton), The Calgary Food Bank, Edmonton's Food Bank, and the Surrey Food Bank (Vancouver).

We know that it's going to take more than a food drive to solve hunger, but events like this are still critical to the cause. Thank you to everyone from Quality Move Management for keeping the shelves stocked, and for raising awareness about hunger in the communities you serve!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
