Prominent Properties Sotheby's International Realty Holds 5th Annual Food Drive

December 19, 2017

Prominent Properties Sotheby’s International Realty (PPSIR) hosted their 5th annual food drive from October 1-November 30. Eleven offices throughout northern New Jersey collected non-perishable food items, such as rice, pasta, peanut butter, canned tuna, canned soups, and canned fruits/vegetables, to help fight hunger in the communities they serve during the holiday season.

More than 2,200 lbs. of food was collected this year, which is the equivalent of 1,800 meals! Since 2013, PPSIR's offices have combined to collect more than 70,000 lbs. of food -- 58,000 meals -- for their neighbors in need.

“This food drive is a company favorite and year after year the enthusiasm our team shows is truly inspiring,” says Charles Oppler, COO and co-Owner of Prominent Properties Sotheby’s International Realty. “We hope our small acts of kindness make a big impact on families who need it most this holiday season.”

Three moving companies volunteered to help make this year's food drive possible. Donations from the Alpine, Edgewater, Englewood Cliffs, Hoboken, and Tenafly offices were delivered to Community FoodBank of New Jersey, courtesy of All Season Movers, an Atlas agent. Donations from the Montclair, Short Hills, and Westfield offices were also delivered to Community FoodBank of New Jersey, courtesy of Main Street Movers, a Bekins agent. Donations from the Franklin Lakes, Ridgewood, and Saddle River offices were delivered to Center For Food Action, courtesy of Ridgewood Moving Services, a Bekins agent.

More than 1 million people, including 1 in 7 children, in New Jersey face hunger. Thank you to everyone at PPSIR, All Season Movers, Main Street Movers, and Ridgewood Moving Services for helping to make this food drive a success again this year!

Make it your New Year’s resolution to hold a food drive in 2018.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
