November 2018 Mover of the Month: Wayne Moving & Storage

December 13, 2018

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Wayne Moving & Storage, an Atlas Van Lines agent, has been named our Mover of the Month for November 2018!

Do you know anyone who doesn't go apple picking in the fall? As soon as late September rolls around, it seems like our social media feeds are filled with with photos of family and friends holding baskets filled with to the brim with apples that they'll use to make pies, cider, and other autumn favorites. Apple picking has become such a popular activity that you might find it hard to believe that any granny smith, red delicious, or honeycrisps go to waste. Yet, it happens.

Fortunately, companies like Wayne Moving & Storage are volunteering to help ensure that as little gets left behind as possible. On November 12, the crew took a trip out to Barnard's Orchard in Unionville, PA. In just a few hours, the team had rescued 1,240 lbs. of apples.

Gleaning, the act of collecting excess fresh food for those in need, is a wonderful way for our network to fight hunger and reduce food waste. And apple gleaning has become an annual tradition for Wayne Moving & Storage. Since 2016, they have gleaned  4,300 lbs. of apples!

We can't take all of the credit for inspiring this initiative, however. Much of that belongs to Wayne Moving's Stacey Louderback, who first started gleaning as a Girl Scout and, over the years, has inspired friends, family, and coworkers to join her.

"I love doing community service projects," Louderback said. "It’s personal for me and so many others."

The weather was unseasonably cold for this year's gleaning, but nothing was going to stop Stacey and the rest of her team.

“I’m glad that we were able to have the chance to do it, the weather didn't cooperate at all," she said. "We were picking in 35-degree Saturday morning weather, with wind gusts! It was frigid, but we were all dedicated to getting it done again this year."

That dedication is so important because 40% of the food produced each year in the United States ends up in a landfill or is left to rot in the field. With 41 million Americans facing hunger each day, that is simply inexcusable.

Wayne Moving & Storage helped address both problems simulataneously by delivering all of the apples to the West Chester Food Cupboard, which provides assistance to approximately 600 local households every month. When it came time to choose November's Mover of the Month,Wayne Moving & Storage was the easy choice.

In addition to the award, Wayne Moving & Storage will also be receiving a special gift from Victory Packaging and Move For Hunger truck decals for their entire fleet.

Congratulations to Wayne Moving & Storage on this much-deserved recognition! Thank you for helping us reduce food waste and fight hunger in the Keystone State!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
