NASMM Sets New Record | 7,000 LBS. of Food Donated During 100 Can Challenge!

July 9, 2018

For the fifth year in a row, the National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM) held their "100 Can Challenge." Members of their network were encouraged to hold food drives and collect at least 100 cans of non-perishable food to show their support for Move For Hunger. This year, 33 companies across the United States participated in the 100 Can Challenge and collected more than 7,000 lbs. of food, a new record!

NASMM2018FoodDrive_SeniorLifeTransitions (1).jpgA huge thank you goes out to everyone who helped organize these food drives, those who donated, and all of our movers who took the time to deliver donations to various food banks. A grand total of 7,064 lbs. of food was delivered to food banks and pantries nationwide, that's enough to provide nearly 5,900 meals!

One of the participants, Comfort Moves LLC, decided that they weren't going to stop at just 100 cans. This Houston-based senior move management company was able to double their 100 can goal, and deliver both food and toiletries to their local food bank! Their CEO, MaryLynne Cappelletti, said that her company is committed to fighting hunger year-round.

"Many of our clients have pantries and freezers full of food they don't want to move to their new homes," Cappelletti said. "Going forward, we will ask them to donate that food and we will then happily deliver their donations to East Spring Branch Food Pantry in their names."

It's always great to see so many different members of our network coming together for the fight against hunger!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
