Moving Ahead Services rescues 1,800 Pounds of Food at Race For The Cure

October 16, 2018

If you have ever participated in a race or walk, chances are you were handed a granola bar, a piece of fruit, or bottle of water at the finish line. Recovery is a very important part to exercise, so race organizers stock up on these healthy treats for runners and walkers to refuel. Unfortunately, they typically order too much of these snacks, which results in a lot of perfectly good food getting thrown out. RacefortheCureFoodPickUpAkron2018_MovingAheadServices (11).jpeg

We started to notice this problem when members of Team Move For Hunger began participating in races themselves. We knew that this food could be saved, and that's when our network of movers wanted to step in to make a difference. This past weekend, Moving Ahead Services did just that. The Stevens Worldwide Van Lines agent rescued 1,800 pounds of food after Race for the Cure in Akron, OH. That's enough to provide 1,500 meals for families in need! Moving Ahead Services then delivered the food to an incredibly thankful United Way of Lake County:

"Thank you for thinking of us and helping us feed Lake County’s hungry. Your organization is one of the greats and our community is lucky to have you!"

This isn't the first time Moving Ahead Services has stepped in to make a rescue. In fact, earlier this year they saved an 7,200 pounds of food from the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon. That's a combined 9,000 pounds from both 2018 races! With more than 25,000 food insecure people in Lake County, including 1 in 6 children, the efforts of Moving Ahead Services will make a positive difference in so many lives! Thanks so much to their team for volunteering their time to rescue the food and help their community.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
