Moving Ahead Services Renews Partnership

January 21, 2020

RED BANK, NJ – Move For Hunger, a national non-profit organization, and Moving Ahead Services announced today that they have renewed their partnership to reduce food waste and fight hunger in the United States. As a member of the Move For Hunger network since 2015, and an official partner of the organization for the past two years, Moving Ahead Services’ 5 branches have provided nearly 71,000 meals to people in the communities they serve.

People throw away a lot of things when they move, including food. Moving Ahead Services educates their customers about the issues of hunger and food waste and encourages them to donate their unopened, non-perishable food items on moving day. Moving Ahead Services then delivers the donations to a local food bank or pantry at no additional cost.

Moving Ahead Services also provides Move For Hunger with further support by assisting with local food drives and by volunteering to rescue food from large events, like the Cleveland Marathon.

“More than 40 million Americans face hunger every day, but we are wasting 40% of the food in the United States each year,” said Adam Lowy, Executive Director and Founder of Move For Hunger. “Moving Ahead Services is providing a sustainable solution to both problems. In addition to the donations, they are also teaching their customers how to be more conscious of hunger and food waste in their community going forward. We are proud to call them our partners.”

“We are extremely honored to be one of the top businesses recognized for fighting to end hunger throughout our community,” said Jeff Collins, President of Moving Ahead Services. “We do not do it for the recognition, we do it simply because we should. Families are struggling to provide the most basic needs and knowing that some children are going to bed hungry, just isn’t ok. We will continue to do all we can to fight against hunger in our communities."

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
