Gateway 505 Donates More than 200 LBS. of Food to the Utah Food Bank

May 14, 2020

Residents at Gateway 505, a multi-family apartment community in Salt Lake City, recently donated more than 200 lbs. of food as part of our COVID-19 relief campaign! That's the equivalent of 170 meals! All of the donations were delivered to the Utah Food Bank, courtesy of our friends from Mountain States Moving & Storage.

As a member of our Multi-Family Program, Gateway 505, a Greystar property, asks all of its residents to donate their non-perishable food when they move out. When a resident gives notice that they will be moving out, the Gateway 505 staff provides them with a food collection bag. Residents are asked to place any unopened, non-perishable food that they'd like to donate into the bag, and then simply leave it in the apartment unit. After they had collected several bags, the team at Gateway 505 contacted us and we arranged for the donations to be picked up and delivered to the food bank. It's that simple.

More than 1,500 multi-family apartment communities are now members of the Move For Hunger network and together they have provided 127,500 meals to families across the United States. Thank you to everyone at Gateway 505 for your commitment to our cause during this difficult time.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has left a massive economic impact and has drastically increased the need for emergency food assistance nationwide. Move For Hunger is actively searching for ways to meet the demand, but we're going to need your help.

If you can, please consider making a donation to Move For Hunger. With your support, we'll be able to rapidly respond and mobilize our network in communities across the United States and Canada.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
