Emrick’s Van & Storage Helps Oklahoma Community Hold Food Drive

May 7, 2020

From April 22-25, Stacy Cumpton from our friends at Emrick’s Van & Storage organized a food drive in her community to help support our COVID-19 relief efforts. Cumpton and her neighbors in the Brasswood section of Edmond, OK collected donations of non-perishable food for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. In just 4 days, they collected nearly 800 lbs. of food, which will provide 650 meals for local families, children, and senior citizens who are facing hunger during this crisis.

"Every week during the shelter in place lockdown, the Brasswood Social Committee set up something fun for the kids to do. The food drive was a way for the adults to get in on the action. Everyone was quickly onboard and excited to get food in the hands of hungry people.”

Emrick's Van & Storage volunteered to deliver the donations to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, the state's largest food bank. Across the country, food banks and pantries are seeing a huge increase in the number of individuals and families that they normally serve. Cumpton said that Emrick’s Van & Storage and their employees are dedicated to giving back to their community, however they can.

“Emrick’s has been helping Mission OKC prepare lunches to pass out to some of the less fortunate. Some of our employees went on slow days over the past month to assist with meal prep.”

According to Feeding America, Oklahoma is the fifth hungriest state in the country. This is due in large part to lack of access to food across the state, also known as food deserts. Residents in 76 out of Oklahoma’s 77 counties lack access to large groceries stores. With grocery stores unable to keep up with the demand for food during the COVID-19 pandemic, food insecurity has increased. Cumpton told us that Emrick’s is happy to partner with other neighborhoods or companies who would like to hold a food drive to help meet the need.

Thank you to Stacy Cumpton, Emrick's Van & Storage, and everyone in the Brasswood community for doing your part to help fight hunger during this difficult time!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
