Dixie Moving & Storage Holds a Food Drive Competition for Thanksgiving

November 27, 2018

The holiday season is a very exciting time for many different reasons, but at Move For Hunger, our favorite part is all of the food drives! Everyone deserves a Thanksgiving dinner with their family, and it's the kindness from all over the country that make these meals possible during this time of year. Dixie Moving & Storage, a Bekins agent, is a perfect example of that kindness, in fact they held not one, but two food drives last weekend!

DixieMovingAndStorageThanksgivingTurkeyFoodDrive2018 (4).jpgThe food drives were held at Harmons Grocery in St. George, Utah and Lin’s Fresh Market in Cedar City. To make things a little more interesting, Dixie Moving & Storage made it competition to see which location could collect the most. Both nonperishable and perishable items were encouraged for donation, including turkeys for Thanksgiving, and we are happy to report that both locations had super successful drives. Lin's Fresh Market collected an impressive 1,329 pounds of food! Harmons Grocery did an awesome job as well, collecting 2,416 pounds! Combined, the totals from these two food drives will be enough to provide more than 3,120 meals.

There are more 382,000 people in Utah who are food insecure, including 1 in 7 children. The donations collected by Dixie Moving & Storage have been delivered to the Utah Food Bank and will be able to help these families and individuals in need. Thanks so much to the Dixie team for taking the time to make a difference in their community this Thanksgiving. Way to set a great example!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
