CORT Furniture Rental Collects 3.5 Tons of Non-Perishables During Thanksgiving Food Drive

December 8, 2017

Last year, CORT Furniture Rental's corporate office in Chantilly, VA held a food drive that brought in 550 lbs. of food. This year they wanted to make an even bigger impact.

CORT held a food drive challenge between 16 of its locations across the United States. Prizes were awarded to the location that donated the most items per employee, and to the district with the most creative food drive.

"Our corporate office had a food drive last year, with no particular agency as the driving factor," said Lauren Castle of CORT. "This year, given our partnership with Move For Hunger, we wanted to include districts across the country to send the message of our desire to launch a nationwide program."

Nearly 7,300 lbs. of food was collected in total, which is enough to provide more than 6,000 meals! The contest ran from November 1-15, and the donations were personally delivered to local food banks just in time for Thanksgiving. The Kalamazoo branch earned "most creative food drive" honors by making a furniture set out of their donations, while the Omaha branch collected the most items per employee. The winning districts each received $500 towards their office holiday party.

Castle hopes that the company-wide food drive can become an annual tradition.

"Move For Hunger is a perfect match for CORT, and I anticipate we will have a long-standing relationship."

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
