Commons at Dawson Creek Apartments Celebrates National Night Out With A Food Drive!

September 28, 2018

Every year in the United States, people from all over the country participate in National Night Out. The annual community-building campaign enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement by combining fun events such as block parties, festivals, and parades with safety demonstrations, youth events, visits from emergency personnel and much more. With community-building being the heart and soul of the evening, Commons at Dawson Creek Apartments knew that it would be the perfect time to host a food drive for their neighbors in need.

Residents were encouraged to bring in donations of non-perishable food, such as peanut butter, tuna fish, pasta and more. To add to the excitement of the evening, tickets to see the Portland Timbers were raffled off for anyone who donated. By the end of the night, the Commons at Dawson Creek Apartments had collected 50 pounds of food, which is enough to provide 40 meals for families in Oregon! With the help of our partners from CORT of Portland, the donations were picked up and delivered to Oregon Food Bank West.

More than 500,000 people in Oregon are food insecure, including 1 in 5 children. Thank you so much to Commons at Dawson Creek Apartments and CORT Portland for taking the time to help their community and join us in the fight against hunger. We hope to see them celebrate  National Night Out with another food drive in 2019!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
