College Students Donate Nearly 10,000 LBS. of Food During Move Out

September 26, 2019

Residents at 91 student living properties across the United States donated their food when they moved out this summer. As a result, more than 9,000 lbs. of food was rescued and delivered to their community food banks, courtesy of CORT and our local moving partners.

RepointBatonRougeFoodCollectionJuly2019.jpgMove For Hunger provided Scion Group, Pierce Education Properties, SG Fusion Living, and Greystar with paper bags to distribute to their participating student living properties. When students moved out in July and August, they simply had to fill a bag with any unopened, non-perishable food that they wanted to donate and drop it off at their property’s management office. This simple request yieled enough food to provide more than 8,000 meals!

Properties from the Scion Group collected the most with almost 6,000 lbs. of food from over 48 housing communities. The Lodge at RIT collected the most with 553 lbs., and our partners at Corrigan Moving Systems of Rochester, generously transported to donations the local food bank.

Greystar properties collected more than 2,500 lbs. of food. The Roosevelt Point location collected the most with 287 lbs., which CORT of Phoenix delivered to Matthew’s Crossing Food Bank.

Pierce Education Properties collected nearly 1,700 lbs. of food, with The Connection donating almost 300 lbs., alone. CORT of Houston happily transported 250 meals to food banks in the area.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
