Coleman Worldwide Moving Holds Food Drive to Fight Hunger in Oklahoma

April 10, 2019

Coleman Worldwide Moving of Lawton, OK, an Allied Van Lines agent, celebrated Mardi Gras this year by holding a food drive from February 22 to March 31! The staff was asked to bring in donations of non-perishable food, especially red beans and rice, to help provide meals for their neighnbors in need.

Why red beans and rice? Well, for starters, those are the staple ingredients of classic New Orleans dish. But, and perhaps more importantly, those are two of the most highly-requested items by food banks because they are great sources of protein and fiber!

More than 270 lbs. of food was collected during the drive, which is enough to provide 225 meals! Coleman Worldwide delivered all of the donations to the Armed Forces YMCA Food Closet.

Coleman's Lawton branch has been a member of our network since 2013 and this food drive helped them reach the 10,000 lbs. of food milestone -- that's the equivalent of 8,340 meals!

More than 360,000 people in the greater Oklahoma City area do not know where their next meal will come from. Thank you to Coleman Worldwide Moving for helping to fight hunger in the communities you serve.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
