CarsArrive CANS Their CEO!

August 16, 2019

Our partners from the CarsArrive decided it was time for their CEO to go!

CarsArriveNetwork_Logo-1650x650.pngOver the past month, the staff has been bringing non-perishable food donations — pasta, cereal, canned goods, etc. — to their headquarters in Mesa, AZ. The goal: to CAN their CEO, Michael Briggs, by filling his office with so much food that he would no longer be able to get inside.

Can the CEO is a great team building activity that helps raise awareness about hunger in the United States by taking action in a fun way. But, rest assured, the CarsArrive team was serious about reaching their goal. They developed a menu of the type of food that should be donated throughout the campaign (Week 1 was canned goods, soups, and juices; Week 3 was Shark Week, so canned tuna was requested). They even designed and printed their own t-shirts!

With that kind of focus, it’s no surpise that Michael came into the office last week and had no place to sit. A grand total of 700 lbs. of food was donated, enough to fill Michael’s office and will provide more than 580 meals to their neighbors in need.

Our friends from Low Budget Movers volunteered to pick up and deliver the donations to the Midwest Food Bank. CarsArrive had donated so much food, however, that the Food Bank couldn’t accept it all! So, they had to deliver 7 boxes of food to the United Way that was located just around the corner.

Maricopa County has one of the highest rates of food insecurity in the country. More than 571,000 people in the county face hunger, including 1 in 5 children. Thank you to everyone at CarsArrive, and to the crew at Low Budget Movers, for recognizing the urgency of the problem and taking action.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
