Move For Hunger was founded on an idea our founder, Adam Lowy, had while working for his family’s moving company. Since then, Move For Hunger was founded in 2009 and has grown to a national hunger relief non-profit that impacts millions of lives every year.

Our Mover Program has pushed on through a tough two years, growing exponentially and helping us deliver and collect more than 4.3 million pounds of food across the United States and Canada in 2021. This provides over 3.5 million meals to the growing food insecure population throughout the country.

The Mover Program has also brought on 50 new movers in 2021, bringing our total mover network to over 1,000 movers. One of those includes Mayflower Van Lines, who joined the fight against hunger in September. Since partnering with Move For Hunger, over 40 agents of Mayflower throughout the United States have joined our mover network and have collected and delivered over 745,000 meals.

“We cannot be more excited about our new partnership with Move For Hunger,” Marc Rogers, President and CEO of Mayflower Van Lines said. “The partnership fits hand-in-hand with Mayflower’s philanthropic mission to fortify the communities in which we serve through eliminating food waste and fighting hunger.”

In 2021, we launched a fresh food recovery program, which helped recover and deliver more than 500,000 lbs of fresh produce to food banks and pantries across the nation.

Mover of the Year

Every year, Move For Hunger picks one moving company that stood out from the crowd and awards them as Mover of the Year. In 2021, that company was Gentle Giant.

Throughout 2021, Gentle Giant volunteered to help with weekly transports to the Bread of Life Food Pantry in Malden, MA from the Greater Boston Food Bank. They hauled more than 385,000 pounds of food during these transports, providing more than 320,000 meals to food insecure communities in Massachusetts.

Gentle Giant Moving Company has been part of Move For Hunger since 2015 and is based in Somerville, MA. Since becoming part of our network, they have collected and delivered almost 800,000 lbs of food, equalling more than 650,000 meals to their community!

Meet the Team

While the program has been growing externally, there’s also been a great deal of internal growth as well. In 2021, the Mover Team added the Program Manager for Movers, Taylor Heideman!

Taylor is originally from a small town in Northern Michigan but she currently resides in Keyport, NJ now with her dog, Murphy. She obtains a Masters in Public Policy and Public Administration with a focus in Human Rights Advocacy from Adler University in Chicago, and a B.A. in Political Science from Penn State University.

She has always had a passion for connecting businesses with a way to make a local impact! She really enjoys helping companies of all sizes find an opportunity to make changes that are meaningful to the work they do.

“I think Move For Hunger is an amazing example of just that- connecting agents in the relocation industry with an avenue to impact the hunger crisis we have in our own communities,” said Taylor. “I’m so excited about connecting with as many members and partners as I can! I love hearing the stories from our moving companies about their collection and donation experience. I’m also looking forward to brainstorming new and creative ways for our agents to help get their customers and communities involved!”

When asked about any future initiatives she’s looking forward to, Taylor stated “There is a ton of stuff going on that I am looking forward to this spring and summer with Move For Hunger! It’s conference season for many of our partners so I’m looking forward to meeting current and future members out on the road."

"I am also looking forward to getting back to in-person events like our Truck Pulls this summer. I can not forget about all of the awesome food drives we have going on too - this is going to be the best Shark Week yet!”

A fun fact about Taylor is that she has helped to build over 100 Little Free Libraries throughout the City of Chicago!
