Take a Bite Out of Hunger during our Shark Week Food Drive

July 25, 2022

In honor of Shark Week 2022, Move For Hunger is holding our annual Shark Week Food Drive. It'll take place from July 24 - 30 across our network to see who can feed the most sharks, ahem, humans.

It’s two years post-pandemic, and while life is returning to normal, inflation is now on the rise. Grocery prices are now nearly 7% higher than they were a year ago, and the median rent has risen 16% in the past twelve months, leaving low-income families to choose between putting food on the table or paying for a roof over their heads. For Shark Week 2022, we’re tuna-cious about doing something about it.

Speaking of tuna, it's a great protein that food banks are always in need of. It also can last up to 3 years, so it almost never goes unused in these at-risk communities. Your donations will stay close to home as we have partner food banks across the country.

Order Your Tuna

Want to help even more, and you don’t have to go to the grocery store? Order your Tuna on amazon! It may sound weird, but by clicking this affiliate link (or one of the links above), a portion of your total order will go to Move For Hunger as a donation.

And if you haven’t already, set your Amazon Smile account to benefit Move For Hunger.

Aren’t part of a food drive, but still want to participate? You’re in luck. There are two ways to do it.

  1. Buy Tuna online and donate it to your local food bank.
  2. Make an online donation! An amount as low as $25 can provide 63 meals. If you’re able to, set a recurring donation to continue to help feed those in need every month.

We hope this July will be the best year yet for our Shark Week Food Drive! Sign up today to get started

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
