Sodexo Campus Move-Outs Provides 1,125 meals to Hungry College Students

June 21, 2022

This summer, Sodexo, a food services and facilities management company, worked with Move For Hunger to provide students at Gonzaga University, located in Spokane, Washington, and Chapman University, located in Orange, California, with the opportunity to give back to their community.

Both universities hosted “Campus Move-Outs”, which encouraged students who live on campus to donate their leftover nonperishable food items during their move-out day. Move For Hunger provided the food collection bags for the students to utilize, and Sodexo hosted the event.

“Our students and our community want to give back - sometimes they just need the bag to put it in and the person to pick it up! That’s where Move For Hunger and Sodexo comes in, along with our campus partners,” said Pat Clelland, Resident District Manager at Gonzaga University.Vanderbilt University Campus Move Out 20224-min (1).jpg

In total, more than 1,350lbs of donations were collected; Chapman University collected 1,050lbs and Gonzaga University collected 300lbs! The donations collected at Chapman University was delivered to their campus pantry & the Community Action Partnership Orange County Food Bank. The donations collected from Gonzaga University was collected by the campus "Campus Kitchen" program. This provides more 1,125 meals to college students in need! Thanks to Beltmann Relocation Group, an agent with North American Van Lines, for transporting the donations!

Sodexo has been a huge supporter of Move For Hunger for the past couple of years, especially through their Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation. Just this past January, Sodexo, Move For Hunger, and Armstrong Relocation worked together to donate 3,500lbs of food to the Kentucky tornado victims. Through food drives and grants, Sodexo has helped provide more than nearly 400,000 meals to those in need across America.

We’re unbelievably thankful for Sodexo’s hard work, considering about 34% of college students experience food insecurity. If you’re interested in making an impact, you can host a food drive with Move For Hunger, or become a monthly donor!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
