J Sol feeds more than 750 people with food drive donations, awarding J Sol February’s Community of the Month!

March 7, 2022

Every month, Move For Hunger chooses a community that displays a huge dedication to end hunger. This month, J Sol, located in Arlington, Virginia, was awarded Community of the Month!

In February, the Jefferson Apartment Group property collected more than 900lbs of donations from a combination from their food drive efforts. These donations are enough to feed more than 750 food insecure individuals in the Virginia area.

“When Jefferson Apartment Group initially partnered with Move For Hunger in 2019, it was part of our Service Committee initiative, which is directly related to our core principles,” said Julie Contos, Director of Marketing at Jefferson Apartment Group.

“What we have found over the years is that in addition to benefiting local food banks and people who live in the neighborhoods where our communities are located, the food drives also create a fun bond for the team to reach their goal. By partnering with Move For Hunger, our residents also appreciate the opportunity to donate and feel good about contributing to the local community,” Julie Contos continued.

Thanks to CORT Washington D.C. for transporting the donations to the Arlington Food Assistance Center! CORT is one of our best partners, and their Washington D.C. location has helped transport nearly 40,000lbs of donations since joining our network, providing over 33,000 meals to food insecure individuals.

Thanks to J Sol and CORT for helping us fight hunger! We’re thankful for every effort towards ending hunger, since more than 42 million people in America are food insecure, with nearly 800,000 individuals in Virginia alone unsure where their next meal will come from.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
