Red160 Apartments Named September’s Community of the Month

October 21, 2023

Each month, Move For Hunger chooses a community that displays a dedication to ending hunger. One of our newest communities, Red160 Apartments has been awarded Community of the Month for September 2023!

Red160 Apartments is an Equity Residential property located in the downtown Redmond community of Seattle. Since joining Move For Hunger, Red160 Apartments has collected over 400 pounds of food, providing over 340 lifesaving meals for those struggling in the area. They have been an invaluable partner in our 'Donate Your Food When You Move' program, consistently showing their commitment to making a difference.

Red160 Apartments’ active involvement in this aspect of our initiative has not only ensured the program's success but has also made it more accessible for individuals in transition to contribute to those less fortunate. What sets this partnership apart is its consistency, joining hands with us five times throughout the years to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.

"Equity Residential is deeply committed to supporting and serving the communities where we do business. We aim to be part of the solution in making our communities better and making a difference in the world. Thank you for recognizing our residents and team at Red160 for their generous donations."
- Natasha Gauthier

Special thanks to our neighbors at Easy Company Moving and Aboda for transporting these donations in coordination with North Helpline Food Banks and Northwest Harvest. Red160 Apartments is located in the heart of King County, Washington, where over 115,000 households rely on the state’s Basic Food Assistance program.

This partnership exemplifies corporate social responsibility and community engagement, making a significant impact in reducing food waste and supporting those in need. We greatly appreciate Red160's ongoing support and look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
