Meet Miramonte, our Community of the Month for October 2023

November 14, 2023

Move For Hunger extends our heartfelt congratulations to Miramonte Apartments in Tacoma, Washington, for being a shining example of what a community can achieve when it comes together to make a difference. Through their dedication, generosity, and commitment to ending hunger, Miramonte has truly earned the title of October's Community of the Month.

Since joining forces with Move For Hunger in 2019, Miramonte has proven itself to be a dedicated ally in the fight against hunger. Nestled between Puyallup and Tacoma, the Miramont community has gone above and beyond, collecting an impressive 1,300 pounds of food and providing over 1,100 life-saving meals for individuals and families facing food insecurity.

Miramonte's commitment to ending hunger in Tacoma was further exemplified through this year’s Hunger Action Month Food Drive in collaboration with Lile Relocation Services and northAmerican Van Lines. Together, they rallied the community and collected over 880+ lbs of food donations. These contributions were directed to the local food bank, Nourish Pierce County, making a direct and positive impact on the lives of those in the community who need it most.

Miramonte, a Goodman Real Estate apartment community, stands out not only for its commitment to philanthropy but also for its dedication to creating a vibrant and caring living environment. Goodman Real Estate's ongoing support and active involvement in Move For Hunger's initiatives demonstrate their dedication to being a force for positive change. Their commitment to addressing the root causes of hunger and their ability to mobilize communities for meaningful action make them a true partner in our shared mission.

Miri Humann, Community Manager of Miramonte, says “I feel that it is always important to give back to the community, because we all need a little help now and again, and we need to be there for each other as a community.”

“With the cost of living so high right now, it is important that everyone has access to the resources that they need, especially food.”
- Miri Humann, Community Manager

Miri understands the value of teamwork in making this a reality, adding “I would like to shout out my entire team on site and at home office for helping coordinate everything, as well as all of the residents here at Miramonte for making it happen!”

The fight against hunger is more important than ever before. According to a new report, the number of people experiencing food insecurity in the United States has increased dramatically, from 34 million to 44 million, including 13 million children. This is the highest rate and number of individuals and children since 2014, and the largest one-year increase in food insecurity since 2008.

That's why Miramonte's efforts are so important. Their food drives and other initiatives are helping to provide much-needed food assistance to families in Tacoma who are struggling to make ends meet.

As we celebrate Miramonte's well-deserved recognition as October's Community of the Month, we look forward to seeing the continued impact this community will make in the fight against hunger. Miramonte has set a standard for compassion and community engagement that we hope will inspire others to join the cause.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
