Recovering Food With Our New Charity Freight Network

December 19, 2024

Every year, 38% of the food supply in the U.S. goes unsold or uneaten. This surplus food is equivalent to over 140 billion meals that could help feed the 47 million Americans experiencing food insecurity. Instead this food ends up in landfills, goes down the drain, or is left in fields to rot. That’s why we decided to turn this surplus into support, one load at a time, with our new Charity Freight program.

What is Charity Freight?

We launched this program in 2024 as another avenue to rescue more food and turn them into meals for those in need. Connected to our food recovery program, freight members are a part of our preferred suppliers list. Our team contacts companies when food transportation is needed in a specific area. Preferred suppliers are asked to donate a minimum of 4 shipments per year to help in the fight against hunger.

In addition to moving bulk food shipments with us, our network receives the tools to encourage their own Food & Beverage clients to get involved through:

  • Rejected Food Cargo
  • Damaged Goods
  • Aging Inventory

Food gets wasted for so many reasons, but with food recovery programs these loads can be rescued and redirected to local food banks and pantries. Learn more about signing up for our Charity Freight program.

The First Two Loads

Our first Charity Freight transport was generously donated by McClay’s Logistics. Offering sustainable transportation services for over 35 years, McClay’s became a partner just this year and have already helped us make a great impact. They covered the cost of a refrigerated load that would otherwise cost close to $1,300 to transport. With their help, we rescued a load full of 29,400 lbs of mustard and turnips from Tifton, GA and delivered them to Atlanta Community Food Bank in Atlanta, GA.

The other donated transport comes from Ready 2 Xecute, a family owned freight company founded in 2020. As a first year partner, they are already showing us their dedication and support and kindly covered the $1,000 cost for us. This shipment alone contains over 15,000 lbs of fresh juice! Not only are we diverting this load from the landfill, but it will also be donated to the Rolling Harvest Food Rescue in New Hope, Pennsylvania.

We are so thrilled for these transports and to see the impact our Charity Freight program makes in the new year. Thank you to our incredible network and partners for your support, expanding our efforts wouldn’t be possible without you.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
