Operation End Veteran Hunger Food Drive Collects Over 18,900 meals to Feed Veterans Nationwide

August 15, 2022

Throughout the month of June, SIRVA Worldwide Relocation Services hosted a Front Porch Food Drive alongside Move For Hunger to help food insecure veterans across the country. This initiative was started in 2021 by Suzie Chapman and TJ Henderson after learning about the disparities veterans in the United States face daily.

“As I was watching television one night I came across a commercial that how the veteran population was being significantly impacted by the homelessness crisis,” said TJ, an 11-year veteran of the Navy and a Supply Chain Manager at SIRVA. “ A myriad of emotions came over me, but the ones that bothered me most were confusion and embarrassment, mixed in with a little anger. Why was I unaware that this was even a problem?”

“A couple of days later I got a phone call from Suzie Chapman expressing how something was driving her to help our veteran population. That’s all I needed to actually get in the game.”

In total, four SIRVA locations participated in the food drive and collected more than 4,500 lbs of food, and raised nearly $6,000, which in total the drive collected over 18,900 meals to help veteran-focused food pantries and soup kitchens fill their shelves.

SIRVA and Move for Hunger also collaborated with three of our outstanding moving companies to fight veteran hunger head on! The food drives were held in four cities across the country; Bentonville, AK, Phoenix, AZ, Atlanta, GA, and Independence, OH. These four communities really brought their a-game!

Our #1 collection champion goes to SIRVA in Bentonville, Arkansas for collecting over 3,300 lbs! This food will provide roughly 2,750 meals to be served by Home for Dinner, a soup kitchen for veterans suffering from food insecurity in Bentonville. The donations were transported by Home for Dinner and brought directly to their location! This was Home for Dinner’s first collaboration with Move For Hunger, and we are thrilled to working with this great organization in the future!

The second-highest amount of donations came from SIRVA’s drive in Atlanta! This Front Porch Food drive collected over 760 lbs of food, and was donated to Soldiers Angels and transported by Beltmann Relocation Group, an agent of North American Van Lines, in Atlanta who is one of our most involved movers! This was also Soldier’s Angels first collaboration with Move For Hunger, and we are ecstatic to know they are providing amazing services to veterans in need.

The third-highest collection location was SIRVA in Independence, Ohio! Around 500 lbs of food were collected in the community and transported by fellow North American Van Line agent, Moving Solutions Inc, another one of our most motivated and involved movers, who continues to show up and step up to help us fight hunger! The donations were transported to the Louis Stokes Cleveland Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and will provide over 415 meals to veterans who are in need of nutritious food. Last but not least, SIRVA in Phoenix collected food to feed veterans in Scottsdale, and we are hoping to collaborate again with them in the future!

This summer’s Front Porch Food Drive would not have been possible without our collaborative partnerships with our outstanding movers and partners in the community. U.S. veterans are 7.4% more likely to suffer from food insecurity compared to non-veterans. Every effort to help our U.S. veterans with food insecurity is essential.

Thank you so much to SIRVA, Beltmann Relocation-Atlanta, Moving Solutions Inc, and our extraordinary donors who made this drive so successful! If you would like to join the fight against hunger, you can join our moving network or host a food drive!
