October 2020 Community of the Month: Jefferson Westshore

November 11, 2020

Each month we highlight one of our amazing Multi-Family members for their commitment to fighting hunger. We’re happy to announce that Jefferson Westshore in Tampa is our October Community of the Month.

Jefferson Westshore is one of several properties that are part of the Jefferson Apartment Group. They joined Move for Hunger last year and have been making an impact ever since. The property joined its sister locations in other parts of the country in a Front Porch Food Drive. This type of food drive allows residents to donate while maintaining their social distance.

“With the ongoing pandemic, food insecurity is one of the biggest problems families are facing all over,” said Flerida Monsivais, Property Manage of Jefferson Westshore.
“We recognize that our community extends beyond the walls of Jefferson Westshore and with our residents, we will continue to fight hunger in the Tampa Bay.”

Because of COVID-19, the hunger crisis has only gotten worse. There were 37 million Americans who were food insecure at the start of the year, and it is estimated that 17 million more Americans have been affected since the start of the pandemic. In Florida, there are nearly 3 million people that are food insecure including 1 in 5 kids.

Jefferson Westshore helped take a bite out of the problem by raising 350 lbs of food which equals 290 meals donated to the Feeding America Food Bank in Tampa. “Our residents really came together and contributed to what became one of the largest food drive collections in the history of Jefferson Westshore.”

The food drive across all properties brought in over 1,300 lbs of food. When asked what made their own food drive so successful, Monsivais said, “They recognize that now more than ever, being united and help those in need could make the difference.”

Congratulations, Jefferson Westshore. Thank you for being a part of Move For Hunger and doing an incredible job.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
