Move For Hunger Transports Over 400,000 Lbs of Pepsi & Quaker Oats Products to One Generation Away in Southeast States

June 27, 2023

For over a month, Move For Hunger teamed up with One Generation Away, a fellow food rescue and distribution non-profit, to get surplus food from a Pepsi/Quaker Oats warehouse in Georgia to those facing hunger in Southeast states. Eleven transports were organized through Move For Hunger between April 18 and May 25, with 1-3 transports occurring per week.

This resulted in the delivery of over 400,000 lbs of Pepsi beverages and Quaker Oats snacks and granola bars!

The donations were taken from the Quaker Oats/Pepsi warehouse in Lithia Springs, Georgia and received by three One Generation Away locations in Franklin, TN; Decatur, AL; and Panama City, FL.

You each (The Move For Hunger Team) have gone above and beyond to make these deliveries happen, and I am so very grateful,
- Scott Lucas, Director of Operations at One Generation Away.

Lucas continued, "I just keep seeing the smiles of the volunteer fire department, which struggles due to funding when we give them a pallet of Gatorade, FREE. Or the kids in the afterschool program when we show up with Propel water, FREE. The churches that are providing meals to senior citizens and can now add Propel or Gatorade to those meals, FREE. The hundreds of families that received Quaker Oats, through our DoorStep Pantry program FREE and with NO QUESTIONS asked."

There are over 52,000 people who struggle with hunger in the areas where the donations were delivered to- with 17,000 people in Decatur, AL; 13,000 people in Franklin, TN; and 22,000 people in Panama City, FL.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
