Moda Moving Springs Into Action, Naming them Mover of the Month for March 2023

April 18, 2023

Each month, Move For Hunger recognizes a moving company that has done exceptional work in our network. This March, we are cheering on Moda Moving for being our third Mover of the Month in 2023!

Moda Moving is a family owned and operated moving company located in Portland, Oregon. Since joining our network last year, Moda Moving has recovered almost 32,000 lbs of food, providing more than 26,000 meals for food banks and pantries in Oregon!

With less than a 24 hours notice, the North American Van Lines agent assisted with a food recovery to help feed families in need. With such short notice, Moda Moving agreed to deliver about 15,000 lbs of donated yogurt from a company that produces applesauce, yogurt, and pudding squeeze patches.

In order to have the capacity to store these yogurts, they had to rearrange their warehouse to fit these 15,000 lbs of non-perishable yogurt, before they could be delivered to their destination. In less than 48 hours, these yogurts were sent to a local food bank in Oregon, where the donation was distributed.

“Working in an industry where we see so much food waste during the moving process, we were ecstatic to partner with Move For Hunger."
- Noah Shields, the Sales Operations and Business Development Specialist for Moda Moving Services

“Partnering with an organization like Move For Hunger provided an opportunity to make a difference with every box of food collected. Food insecurity has always been an issue in this country, and we witnessed firsthand what the COVID epidemic has done to magnify the problem,” continued Shields.

In Oregon, over 400,000 adults are food insecure, and 1 in 7 children don’t know when their next meal will be. This year, Moda Moving has recovered nearly 23,000 lbs of food which is equivalent to 19,166 meals for those in need in Oregon! We are thankful for Moda Moving’s support in our mission to fight hunger.

Congratulations Moda Moving for being our March 2023’s Mover of the Month! If you are a mover, and are interested in becoming involved to serve food insecurity communities in your area, consider joining our mover network.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
