May 2017 Mover of the Month: Jersey Shore Moving & Storage

June 21, 2017

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Jersey Shore Moving & Storage, a National Van Lines agent, is our Mover of the Month for May 2017!

For nearly five years, Jersey Shore Moving & Storage has been helping us fight hunger in the Garden State. In addition to collecting donations from their clients, they have been an outstanding member of their community, always willing to volunteer their time and resources to help out with food drives.

Last month, for example, Jersey Shore Moving & Storage made time on a Saturday to assist with the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive, the nation's largest one-day food collection effort.  For 25 years, National Association of Letter Carriers has asked Americans to leave donations of non-perishable food items on their porch or near their mailbox. Postal workers from across the country collect the donations as they deliver mail along their route.

Food banks don't always have enough time or the trucks to get all of the donations from the post offices back to their facility. That's where our movers come in.

Jersey Shore Moving & Storage sent a truck and a crew to the Lakewood Post Office on a Saturday at 7:00 PM to make sure the food got delivered to the Fulfill (formerly known as the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties). Because of their efforts, more than 3,000 lbs. of food made it to the food bank, enough to provide more than 2,500 meals.

A donation of that size is especially important this time of year. More than 114,000 people in Monmouth and Ocean Counties, including 1 in 7 children, face hunger every day. Low-income families with children who had been receiving free or reduced-cost breakfast and/or lunch at school struggle to replace those meals during summer break. So the need, which was already considerable, is even greater.

That's why the work Jersey Shore Moving & Storage is doing is so important. Since joining our network in 2012, Jersey Shore Moving & Storage has delivered nearly 9,500 lbs. of food -- enough to provide nearly, 7,900 meals -- to Fulfill.

Along with the award, Jersey Shore Moving & Storage will also be receiving a Move For Hunger hand truck, courtesy of Victory Packaging, lunch for their entire staff, compliments of Montway Auto Transport, and Move For Hunger truck decals for their entire fleet.

Congratulations to Jersey Shore Moving & Storage on this much-deserved recognition. Thank you for commitment to reducing food waste and fighting hunger in the Garden State!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
