Maple Crest Farms & TQL Cares Brings Farm Fresh Food To Huntington

July 11, 2022

You’ve heard of farm to table; now Move For Hunger is making farm to food bank happen!

Maple Crest Farms, a small family farm located in Manchester, Kentucky, is the largest provider of farm-fresh food in Feeding Kentucky's Farms to Food Bank program. When the farm wanted to share its bounty with a food bank desperately in need of food 3 hours away in Huntington, West Virginia they reached out to Move For Hunger for assistance.

Leveraging Move For Hunger's new cold chain network, TQL Cares donated the refrigerated transportation of 55,000 farm-fresh eggs and 1,800 lbs of beef and pork to the Facing Hunger Foodbank!

Move For Hunger has emphasized increasing access to fresh food in food-insecure communities, which is why this transport is so important.

During harvest season Move For Hunger has a new way to partner with farms through its cold storage solution. Fresh produce can sit safely in the refrigerated unit, that Move For Hunger provided, near or at the farm until a transportation partner can come to pick them up. This way, farmers that partner with Move For Hunger are able to harvest their produce efficiently, while Move For Hunger finds the best transport partner during that time.

Maple Crest Farms is one of the first farms that Move For Hunger has provided the new temporary cold storage solution, and we are excited to see the produce, like fresh cabbage, corn and broccoli, that Maple Crest Farms will be harvesting this upcoming season. This way, produce that is harvested will stay fresh longer before being picked up by a selected transport partner and donated to fresh food insecure communities!

TQL, a Move For Hunger partner, was able to pick up the eggs and meat from Maple Crest Farms and transport it safely in a refrigerated truck to the Facing Hunger Food Bank in Huntington, Virginia!  TQL_Cares_Feeding_KY__Maple_Crest_Farms_to_Huntington_WV_6-9-22-2222.jpg

TQL is one of the largest freight brokerage firms in North America and has been working with Move For Hunger since early 2020 to transport donations. TQL has helped transport almost 230,000 lbs of food, equalling more than 190,000 meals, to aid in the fight against hunger.

42 million Americans are food insecure, and in West Virginia alone, nearly 250,000 people are food insecure and don’t know where their next meal is coming from. Therefore, every donation is needed, especially a fresh one.

With the help of TQL's refrigerated transportation, we were able to transport farm-fresh food to a more remote food bank that was struggling to capture fresh food. In West Virginia, 1 in 6 kids are food insecure, so the food distributed to the various agencies around the region was greatly appreciated.

If you want to join us in the fight against hunger, you can do so by making a donation, hosting a fundraiser or a food drive, or joining our network
