The Lafayette at Valley Forge Collects 1,800 lbs of Food Donations, and is Named June’s Community of the Month!

July 12, 2022

Every month, Move For Hunger recognizes and congratulates an exceptional multifamily community that has put in tremendous effort in helping us fight hunger! For June, we are excited to announce our Community of the Month winner, The Lafayette at Valley Forge!

Located in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, and operated by the Westover Companies, The Lafayette at Valley Forge collected 1,800 lbs of food, or 1,500 meals over the past few months!

Lafayette at Valley Forge participated in the Westover Companies Earth Day food drive throughout the month of April, and the 1,000 lbs of food donations were delivered to the Food Bank of South Jersey. Then they collected a whopping 758 more pounds of food as part of the move out program!

"The Westover Companies is proud to partner with Move For Hunger," said Devin McCullough, Property Manager at The Lafayette at Valley Forge. "We are so grateful to our residents, past and present, who have helped to donate to such a worthy cause. Having seen the amount of food waste in the apartment industry first-hand, we appreciate an outlet for good that Move For Hunger provides to both prevent food waste and help out those who need it."

The Lafayette at Valley Forge has been with us since the beginning of 2018 and have worked with us to collect over 2,170 lbs, or over 1,800 meals, within the last four years. We are so grateful for our partnership with Lafayette at Valley Forge and Westover Companies, and we are so excited to see what’s next!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
