June’s Mover of the Month is Awarded to the Marvelous Mother Lode Van & Storage!

July 12, 2022

Every month, Move For Hunger celebrates one of our amazing movers that have gone out of their way to make change in their community in the fight against hunger. This June, our marvelous Mover of the Month is Mother Lode Van & Storage, an agent for NorthAmerican Van Lines. Over the last six months, Mother Lode has transported over 1,000 lbs of food, equalling more nearly 900 meals, from various apartments in Northern California, and made its mark as part of the Great NorthAmerican Food Drive!

Mother Lode Van & Storage, based in Rancho Cordova, California, has been crushing it this year in multifamily community pick-ups and transports! Mother Lode has helped recover 950 lbs of food from families moving out of apartment complexes, and donations were  given to Volunteers of America in Northern California and Northern Nevada. With their participation in the Great NorthAmerican Food Drive, 113 lbs of food was transported to Rancho Cordova Food Locker, a local food pantry.

"Giving back to a community that has supported us for 30 years is like breathing air, it's automatic," said Alysha Tompkins, Office Manager. "With a partnership like Move For Hunger, we can do just that and know that the food we receive goes straight to the people that need it most."

Since Mother Lode joined Move For Hunger in January of 2019, this rockstar moving company has donated, collected and transported over 3,713 lbs of food, which is equivalent to over 3,094 meals! Over the last three years, Mother Lode has shown up and continued to help fight hunger in California where 1 in 5 Californians are considered food insecure.

Congratulations to Mother Lode Van & Storage on being  June’s Mover of the Month this year! Thank you so much for your dedication and commitment to fighting hunger with Move for Hunger! If you’re a mover and would like to make a difference in the communities you serve, consider joining the Move for Hunger network!!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
