JLL Provides over 55,000 Meals During Thanksgiving Food Drive & Fundraiser

December 16, 2020

At a time of unprecedented need, JLL, the real estate juggernaut, rose to the challenge to take a sizable bite out of hunger. Through a socially distant Front Porch Food Drive and fundraiser, JLL helped provide over 55,000 meals to those in need.

In November, the commercial real estate and property investment company encouraged several of its employees in New Jersey to get out in their community and collect food in their neighborhoods. Six in total from three offices hit the streets dropping off collection bags and flyers on front porches with instructions to fill them up with food to be picked up later that week. Without needing any face to face contact, the Front Porch Food Drive collected over 1,800 lbs which equates to over 1,500 meals. Roxanne Keane led the way by collecting 40 bags of food while each of the three offices gathered almost 500 lbs or more of food.

All of the food stayed locally and was either distributed to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey; Lunch Break, a food bank in Monmouth County; Cranford Family Care, a food pantry in Cranford, NJ or Interfaith Food Pantry in Morris Plains, NJ. Some of the food was dropped off by the employees while the rest was transported to the food bank by Harrington Moving & Storage, Armstrong Relocation, Moishe’s Moving Systems, and All Season Movers

To go along with the food drive, JLL hosted a virtual fundraiser that raised over $23,000 that included a special donation of $20,000 from JLL’s Women’s Business Network. These two efforts combined will help provide over 55,000 meals.

Those meals are desperately needed as The Washington Post recently reported that nearly 8 million Americans have fallen into poverty since the summer. The research found that the poverty rate rose to 11.7% — a 2.4 percentage-point jump since June. The rise was the fastest since tracking began 60 years ago.

We’re extremely grateful for JLL, their employees, and the Women’s Business Network for their support against the hunger crisis. Each food drive and fundraiser helps us get one step closer to ensuring nobody goes without food. Start yours today!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
