ICON at Dulles Donates 600 lbs During Hunger Action Month

October 13, 2020

During September’s Hunger Action Month, Icon at Dulles hosted a food drive that started out with a bang. Not even halfway through the month, the Gates Hudson property already donated 600 pounds of food - the equivalent of 500 meals.

CORT Washington D.C. helped transport all of the food to the Capital Area Food Bank in Washington D.C. CORT continues to be an amazing transportation partner for us. All-time, they have transported over 17,000 lbs of food (nearly 15,000 meals).

ICON at Dulles is located in one of the most affluent counties in the state with the food insecurity rate at 5.5%, however, the state as a whole is nearly double that at 9.9% according to statistics from Feeding America. The Capital Area Food Bank is located in the District of Columbia where the food insecurity jumps even higher to 10.7%.

The food comes at an incredibly important time where food insecurity could be up 50% in 2020 with an estimated 17 million more Americans struggling to get food due to COVID.

A partner since 2018, ICON at Dulles has donated over 1,000 lbs of food to the local area food bank.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
