December 28, 2021

There’s nothing sweeter than being able to donate from farm to food bank

Here’s how it worked: The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, a member of Feeding America, donated sweet potato seed to Hering Farms in Faison, North Carolina. In turn, the farmer agreed to plant those seeds in over 50 acres of their land and donate the crops that turned out for hunger relief.

The next step was getting the sweet potatoes to their next destination! Move For Hunger partnered with TQL (Total Quality Logistics) to complete 2 transports of more than 96,000lbs of sweet potatoes to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina in Raleigh!

TQL is one of the largest freight brokerage firms in North America and has been working with Move For Hunger since early 2020 to transport food donations. In total, TQL has helped transport almost 150,000lbs of food, equalling more than 118,000 meals, to aid in the fight against hunger.

TQL isn’t the only organization transporting sweet potatoes - Brazos Raleigh Movers is also helpingTQL Sweet Potato Transport to Food Bank 12-15-212 (1).jpg transport sweet potatoes from Hering Farms to Heaven’s Gate Ministry and Good News Buenas Nuevas. So far they’ve transported 32,000lbs of sweet potatoes!

In North Carolina, more than 1,400,000 people and 1 in 5 children are food insecure. In central and eastern North Carolina, over half a million people don’t know where their next meal is coming from. Every donation is needed, no matter how big or small!

Access to fresh food isn’t something everyone has. In fact, more than 23 million people live in areas known as , an area in which someone does not have access to a food source, such as a supermarket, nearby. This is why Move For Hunger launched the Fresh Food Initiative in the summer of 2021 with the goal to recover more fresh and perishable food.
