Dircks Moving and Logistics awarded Mover of the Month for fighting food insecurity by transporting almost 4,000 meals in 2021

January 18, 2022

Each month, Move For Hunger chooses a moving company that has done a trucking good job in the fight against hunger, making them the Mover of the Month. This month, that company is Dircks Moving and Logistics!

In 2021, Dircks Moving and Logistics, located in Phoenix, Arizona, hosted three of their own food drives, collectively donating almost 750lbs, equalling over 600 meals, to St. Vincent de Paul and St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance.

The Mayflower agent has also assisted in transporting donations in 2021, raising their total to almost 5,000lbs and 4,000 meals donated to food insecure communities in Arizona. Since joining the Move For Hunger mover network in 2011, Dircks has helped transport more than 20,700 meals to hungry individuals and families. We’re beyond thankful for their dedication to our cause!

“We’re so proud to partner with Move for Hunger to fight hunger and reduce food waste in our local community. At Dircks, we truly believe in leaving our community better than we found it, and our friends at Move for Hunger help us accomplish that, especially in times like these when it is most needed,” said Natalie McDonald, Marketing Manager of Dircks.

Arizona hosts more than 900,000 food-insecure individuals and over 40 food deserts. Food deserts are considered an area in which someone does not have access to a food source, such as a supermarket, nearby. With help from our moving partners, like Dircks Moving and Logistics, we can fight food insecurity one meal at a time!

McDonald continued, “With Maricopa County having one of the highest rates of food insecurity in the United States, we’re grateful for the opportunity to donate our time and resources to combat this problem. The Move for Hunger team makes it easy and fun to get involved and help our neighbors in need!”

Congratulations to Dircks Moving and Logistics on being named December’s Mover of the Month! If you’re interested in joining the Move For Hunger network, make sure to check out our Multi-Family and Mover sign-up pages!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
