COVID Doesn’t Slow Our Network Down

September 16, 2020

COVID can’t slow our network down. Even when the pandemic took hold across the world, our team and network responded by continuing to host food drives to meet the growing need, but also create a brand new socially-distant food drive.

The Front Porch Food Drive is simple in design. The organizer drops off collection bags around their neighbors with full instruction on how to donate food and what Move For Hunger is all about. They also state the time in which they will be back around to collect food. When the day approaches, neighbors simply have to leave their food out on the front porch to collect. No contact needed.

Over the course of the year, we’ve now held countless Food Drives & Front Porch Food Drives. Here are a few highlights:

Continental Societies is a national non-profit organization that serves over a quarter of a million of children and youth annually through programs in Health; Education; Employment; recreation; and arts and humanities. They also provide service programs in each local chapter along with scholarship opportunities.

The Miami Chapter hosted its very own Front Porch Food Drive to benefit the Homestead Food Kitchen. The Homestead Food Kitchen is in an area where almost a million people are food insecure and that number is dramatically increasing due to the pandemic.  The food drive collected 2,300 lbs of food which is nearly 2,000 meals. This was the chapter’s first of hopefully many annual food drives with Move For Hunger and if the original is any indication, they will continue to make a big impact in their local community.

In the neighboring state of Georgia, RentPath Front Porch Food Drive 2020 - Nieka Harris (1) (1).jpgRentPath hosted its own Front Porch Food Drive. Known for easily connecting prospective renters and properties together through digital marketing and leasing solutions, they encouraged their own employees to get out and collect food from their respective neighborhoods. In total, 3 employees took up the challenge and that’s all that was needed to make a substantial difference.

From their Atlanta neighbors, RentPath employees collected 2,000 lbs which is about 1,650 meals that were donated to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Annette Keith led the charge by collecting exactly 1,000 lbs of food herself. The food bank supports nearly 700,000 people as about 1 in 8 people in Fulton and Dekalb Counties is food insecure.

While organizations stepped up to fight hunger, so did our transportation partners. A-One Moving based outside of Baltimore, Maryland. We got the call from KraftHeinz informing us that had 5 pallets of food they wanted to donate. We informed A-One Moving and they got right on it transporting the food from Hurlock, MD to Caring For Friends in Philadelphia. Caring For Friends provides food and friendship to homebound seniors, the disabled, homeless, and families in need. The transport was a big one - over 7,500 lbs of food which is the equivalent of about 6,400 meals.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
