CFBNJ Turkey Drive collects more than 33,000 meals for New Jersey food insecure communities

January 26, 2022

There was no fowling around with the 21st annual Community Food Bank of New Jersey’s Turkey Drive last November!

The event collected more than 4,400 turkeys and over 35,500 lbs of food, which is good for about 33,250 meals, to provide to food-insecureCFBNJ Turkey Drive - Nelson Westerberg - 4 Sites - Non-Perishables - 11-20-21-2.jpg families and individuals throughout New Jersey this holiday season. The 2021 event exceeded last year’s event, collecting 2,500 turkeys and over 20,800 meals.

Nelson Westerberg of New Jersey completed 4 pickups for the event, transporting over 13,300 lbs, about 11,000 meals, back to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey (CFBNJ). Overall, Nelson Westerberg and their offices in Illinois, Texas, New Jersey, and Georgia have been invaluable members of the Move For Hunger network. Nelson Westerberg of Illinois recently partnered with Top Box Foods to donate more than 20,000 fresh produce meals this holiday season.

Residents are encouraged to donate frozen turkeys and hams, as well as holiday trimmings over a two-day period. They also have more than 35 locations all over the state of New Jersey, so whoever wants to participate is able to.

Every donation counts, considering New Jersey has more than 760,000 food-insecure residents that don’t have regular access to food. 1 in 10 children don’t know where their next meal will come from.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
