April's Community of the Month Goes to The Place at Savanna Springs

April 24, 2021

Every month we love to share our appreciation for members of our multi-family network that are making a considerable impact on lessening food insecurity in their communities! We could not be more excited to announce that our community of the month goes to The Place at Savanna Springs!

As part of Move For Hunger’s Spring Into Action campaign, The Place at Savanna Springs hosted a food drive from March 22 to April 2 that brought in 1,356 lbs. of food!

Yucca Moving & Storage Inc. came in to help deliver this huge donation to the St. Vincent de Paul Society food bank!

Out of the 24 MC Companies properties participating in our Spring campaign, they donated the most food out of all of them! However, the 24 MC Companies properties together have donated 10,921 lbs. of food. This is an amazing donation that will provide over 9,100 meals to those in need!

“I never get used to the unexpected gifts but I’m never surprised either,” says Lyn Marquis, Director of Philanthropy at MC Residential Communities.  “I am so thankful for our employees and residents who continue to support the many causes we rally around as an organization.”

The Place at Savanna Springs is in Sierra Vista, AZ. Arizona has a food insecurity rate of 13.1%, which leaves 937,300 people food insecure. The food insecurity rate is even higher in Cochise County, where they are located, with 14.4% of the population being food insecure.

We could not be more delighted to be partnered with MC Companies because they have so many properties that are doing good for their local communities! The Place at Savanna Springs’ contribution will provide 1,130 meals to those experiencing hunger.

Anyone can join in our cause to fight against hunger! Get your local community or get involved yourself by hosting a food drive, fundraiser, or donate!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
