4 Anti-Hunger Organizations to Support & How to Get Involved in 2024

March 10, 2024

Recent numbers from the World Health Organization and UNICEF show that malnutrition contributes to nearly half of the deaths in children under the age of 5 around the world.

In the United States alone, where over a third of the food goes uneaten or unsold, over 44 million people are faced with food insecurity. One of the many ways that we can help fight hunger and minimiza food insecurity is by providing support for Anti-Hunger Organizations around the world!

Feed the Children

Founded in 1979, Feed the Children is a non-profit organization working in the US and other countries around the world to improve the security of families and children in terms of food and nutrition by providing them the skills and resources to achieve this. They offer many ways, all of which are outlined on their website, for you to help provide food and life essentials to children and families around the world.

Bread for the World

The U.S. based organization, Bread for the World, aims to end hunger both at home and abroad by advocating for national leaders across the globe to take action. They do so by organizing, amongst other things, advocacy campaigns to pass or block laws that impact hunger and poverty. The organization also equips people with the knowledge and resources needed to take action by, for example, writing letters and emails to local and national governments.

Meals on Wheels

With the goal of alleviating hunger and loneliness amongst senior citizens, community centers, and people with disabilities in America, Meals on Wheels sponsors programs across the country to deliver nutritious foods to those in need. An organization that started with a small group of Philadelphia citizens in the 1950’s, now provides over 2 million senior citizens across the US with meals each year.

Move For Hunger

And lastly, but certainly not least, Move For Hunger is a national Anti-Hunger organization that aims to fight against food insecurity and food waste throughout the United States. What began as providing people the opportunity to donate their food when they move has turned into an organization with multiple programs that allow individuals, businesses, and communities to contribute to the fight against hunger!

How you can help

1. Get involved

The organizations mentioned above provide multiple ways in which you can get involved in the fight against hunger! For example, Move For Hunger’s Spread the Love initiative allows you to sign up to host your own Food Drive or Fundraiser with the aim of encouraging communities to donate jars of peanut butter and Jelly to. There are many other ways to get involved, such as volunteering at one of your local food banks or food pantries!

2. Raise Awareness

One of the best ways to encourage those around to help in the fight against hunger is to spread awareness. Whether that be by sharing social media posts to your profiles, wearing apparel from one of these organizations, or reaching out to elected officials to address policies and concerns about food insecurity and food waste, there are many ways for you to spread the word about Hunger and how people can help!

3. Support the cause

One of these quickest ways to help many of these organizations is through donations. There are often multiple ways in which this can be done, whether that be via PayPall, a check, setting up a fundraiser, or even donating crypto!

There are so many ways that each and every one of us can contribute to the fight against hunger. Whether it be by supporting one of these Anti-Hunger Organizations, or by volunteering at your local food drive, we hope that you will join us in the fight against hunger!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
