Fighting Hunger, One Move at a Time

More than 44 million Americans face hunger every day including 1 in 5 children. Meanwhile, 38% of the food produced in the United States every year is wasted. Move For Hunger offers a sustainable solution to this inexcusable paradox.

Our network of socially-responsible relocation companies provides their customers, clients, and residents with the opportunity to donate their food when they move. Members of Move For Hunger also volunteer to host/assist with community food drives, participate in cause marketing campaigns, and create employee giving programs.

Since 2009, we have delivered 43 million pounds of food to food banks across the United States and Canada. That’s the equivalent of more than 35 million meals.

And we’re just getting started.

Our Story

Adam Lowy basically grew up on the back of a moving truck. Lowy’s Moving Service has been moving lives and furniture in New Jersey for nearly a century, and Adam spent plenty of summers helping his dad and uncle with the family business. Every job was different, but if there was one thing every customer had it common it was that they all threw out a lot of stuff when they moved. Clothes, furniture, electronics...you name it, people tossed it. But it was the food that really bothered Adam. Sometimes a box stuffed with enough food to stock a pantry would be left by the curb. Other times it was simply a stray can of soup forgotten in the back of a cupboard. Either way, it always felt like a minor tragedy that perfectly good food was going to waste.

Recognizing an opportunity to make a difference in his community, Adam decided to take action. In 2009, he and his family started asking customers if they had any food they would like to donate to the local food bank. After just one month, he had collected 300+ pounds of food. Adam wondered, “If one company could make this kind of impact, what could an entire network of moving companies do?”

What We Do

By providing people with the opportunity to donate their food when they move, we believe we can eliminate food waste during the relocation process. Why is that important? Because 33 million Americans move every single year. If we recovered just 1 pound of food from each of them, we’d be able to provide 27.5 million meals to people all across the country.

A Simple Solution Becomes So Much More

Move For Hunger always had the potential to take on a more active role in the fight against hunger. Transportation is a significant and sometime prohibitive expense for food banks. Our unique partnership with the relocation industry provides us with access to trucks and drivers nationwide. Members of our network use their resources to help feed their neighbors in need in a variety of ways.

  • FOOD DRIVES

Move For Hunger has organized thousands of food drives over the past 14 years. Our movers provide collection boxes and volunteer to pick up and deliver the donations to the local food bank or pantry

  • Food Rescues

If you’ve ever been to an endurance event, like a marathon or 5K, you may have noticed that a lot of the fruit, snacks, and water intended for the competitors gets left behind or thrown in the trash. Our movers have recovered more than 1 million lbs. of food/beverages from these events over the past 6 years.

  • Gleanings

Our network is helping get fresh produce from the farm to the food bank. Gleaning is the act of collecting unharvest crops for people in need. Members of Move For Hunger have volunteered to pick apples, corn, and strawberries and delivered them directly to a local food pantry.

  • Backpack Programs

Students who receive free or reduced-cost meals at school often face hunger during the weekend. Several of our movers have partnered with their local food banks to deliver backpacks full of nutritious, non-perishable food to take home on Fridays during the school year.

  • Disaster Relief

When disaster strikes, our network responds. Members of our network have held relief drives and driven thousands of miles to deliver truckloads of food, water, and other supplies to help victims of hurricanes and other natural disasters.

Our Partners

Move For Hunger can’t continue to reduce hunger and food waste without partners. Their generosity provides us with the resources we need to expand our programs and educate people about the issues.

Our Vision

Move For Hunger is dedicated to fostering community partnerships that will continue to grow organically for years to come. We are committed to changing the way entire industries do business. We will challenge millions of people to confront the issues of hunger and food waste and provide them with opportunities to take action. Together, day-by-day, we will create a more just and sustainable future.

Why we fight

Food is a fundamental human right. We believe that everyone should have access to enough nutritious food to support a happy healthy life. People who are food insecure are more likely to struggle in school and to be in poor health. A nation that allows 10% of its citizens to go hungry cannot achieve its full potential. Hunger is a formidable barrier to a person’s, and, by extension, our country’s prosperity.

Learn More About Hunger

It’s hard to believe that, in a country where 44 million people face hunger every day, so much food could go to waste. Yet, this is precisely what is happening – and we’re all partially to blame. Our food waste epidemic also has profound consequences for the planet. It has been linked to climate change and contributes to land, air, and water pollution. It is nothing short of an environmental catastrophe.
