Meet Emma Gilkey, Transportation Coordinator At Move For Hunger

April 7, 2024

Welcome to our Meet the Team series, where we’ll be introducing the Move For Hunger Staff 1 blog and 9 questions at a time. We hope you enjoy getting to know our team members as much as we enjoy working with them!

This month we’re introducing Emma Gilkey, our Transportation Coordinator extraordinaire! Emma is passionate about making a difference and our mission at Move For Hunger.

What Do You Do At Move For Hunger?

I’m a Transportation Coordinator on the Multifamily team. I coordinate food pick-ups for apartment complexes that have collected food from food drives or from tenants moving out and arrange for the food to be delivered to local food banks. I communicate frequently with our transportation partners across the country to ensure that the food is picked up and delivered to local agencies in need.

Why did you join Move For Hunger?

I was searching for work that felt meaningful to me. I have always been interested in non-profit work and I had a college internship at a local food bank and it really made me aware of how prevalent food insecurity is in our world. I loved the mission of Move For Hunger and knew it was something that I was passionate about so I’m so happy to have the opportunity to be here and make a difference.

What do you like about working at Move For Hunger?

I love being a little part of an organization that is making a difference in the world. I love that everyone is here for a reason and are all collectively passionate about the mission of Move For Hunger.

What’s something that you’re working on right now that you’re excited about?

I’m currently wrapping up a lot of the Spread the Love food drives across the country and I’m excited to get all the weight receipts in from the food banks to see how great the impact was!

Who has influenced you the most?

My twin brother, Holden. He is the best person I know and I’ve admired him my whole life. I love how passionate and creative he is and I strive to be like him in a lot of ways. He dives into everything wholeheartedly and is one of the most loyal people I’ve ever met.

What food could you eat every day and never get tired of?

Spicy hummus, guacamole, popcorn, and honeycrisp apples (not at the same time).

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

I think my favorite piece of advice is “it is not necessary to react to everything you notice.” That has really helped me to stay kind and optimistic and have a much more open-minded view of the world.

What’s your favorite movie?

La La Land or My Best Friend’s Wedding. Nothing like a good rom-com!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
